European Mountains

Our Selection ❄️ Winter 2024

The Pyrenees mountain range separates the Iberian Peninsula from the rest of Europe, stretching more than 430km

Between Spain and France and rising higher than 3400m in elevation. Hiking trails traverse the entire length of the range and national parks offer shorter trails, while dozens of ski resorts can be found on both sides of the Pyrenees. Andorra is a tiny sovereign state in the heart of the chain. The Pyrenees are older than the Alps, between 100 and 150 million years ago, during the Lower Cretaceous Period

Andorra is a tiny, independent principality situated between France and Spain in the Pyrenees mountains. It’s known for its ski resorts and a tax-haven status that encourages duty-free shopping.

The Penibaetic System is the southernmost of the three systems of mountain ranges of the Baetic System in

the southern Iberian Peninsula. It includes the highest point in the peninsula, 3,478 m high Mulhacén in the Sierra Nevada.  The Baetic System is made up of multiple mountain ranges that reach from western Andalusia to the Region of Murcia, southern Castile-La Mancha and the Land of Valencia. The Baetic System as a geological feature belongs to a larger orogeny usually called the Gibraltar Arc. The geodynamic mechanisms responsible for its formation are so far relatively unknown.

Sierra Nevada located in the heart of Andalucia in Southern Spain ranks amongst the best and is known for being the most snow-sure ski resort in Spain. It is the southernmost ski resort in Europe and the highest on the peninsula.

The Alps are the highest and most extensive mountain range system that lies entirely in Europe, stretching approximately  1200km across eight Alpine countries:

France, Switzerland, Monaco, Italy, Liechtenstein, Austria, Germany, and Slovenia. The Alpine arch generally extends from Nice on the western Mediterranean to Trieste on the Adriatic and Vienna at the beginning of the Pannonian Basin.  The mountains were formed over tens of millions of years as the African and Eurasian tectonic plates collided. Extreme shortening caused by the event resulted in marine sedimentary rocks rising by thrusting and folding into high mountain peaks such as Mont Blanc and the Matterhorn.  Mont Blanc spans the French–Italian border, and at 4809m is the highest mountain in the Alps. The Alpine region area contains 128 peaks higher than 4,000 m

The French Alps are the portions of the Alps mountain range that stand within France, located in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur regions. While some of the ranges of the French Alps are entirely in France, others, such as the Mont Blanc massif, are shared with Switzerland and Italy.

About 40% of Italy's land is mountainous, offering great places to ski in winter. The Alps, in the north, are divided into regions called, from west to east, the Occidentali , the Centrali, and the Orientali and are on the borders with France, Austria, and Switzerland. The backbone of Italy is formed by the north-south trending Appennino chain. The Dolomites are really part of the Alps, located in the South Tyrol, Trentino, and Belluno.

The Alpine region of Switzerland, conventionally referred to as the Swiss Alps.  represents a major natural feature of the country and is, along with the Swiss Plateau and the Swiss portion of the Jura Mountains, one of its three main physiographic regions. The Swiss Alps comprise almost all the highest mountains of the Alps, such as Dufourspitze (4,634 m), the Dom (4,545 m), the Liskamm (4,527 m), the Weisshorn (4,506 m) and the Matterhorn (4,478 m).

Iceland, a Nordic island nation, is defined by its dramatic landscape with volcanoes, geysers, hot springs

and lava fields. Massive glaciers are protected in Vatnajökull and Snæfellsjökull national parks. The highest elevation for Iceland is listed as 2110m at Hvannadalshnúkur. Iceland has extensive volcanic and geothermal activity. The rift associated with the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, which marks the division between the Eurasian Plate and North American tectonic plates, runs across Iceland from the southwest to the northeast.

Iceland isn't always top of the list when it comes to skiing destinations, but the country offers a ski experience unlike any other
